Many moons ago, I once heard a high-calibre marketing gun claim that most of us are bare-faced liars.
Case in point:
In a social setting, if someone asks us whether we have watched a certain film and everyone else nods their heads, we'll probably say yes even if we haven't watched it.
Why do we behave this way?
He said it's because we are hardwired to avoid social rejection at ALL costs.
It explains why kids will plead for their parents to cough up the dough for the latest Nike trainers.
It's why neighbours will go to war every Christmas to see who can turn their homes into an epileptic's worst nightmare.
It's why people will go into silly sums of debt to finance a car they can ill afford just to impress people they hate.
And it's also why well-meaning friends and relatives will sometimes steer you away from your ideals to satisfy their own.
Human psychology is truly a fascinating subject.
Does that mean anyone who has ever uttered a white lie is an irredeemable pagan?
Of course—
NOT.
However, I'd argue that once upon a time in the not-so-distant past when we actually hunted for our food instead of powering up Uber Eats at the first hunger pang…
It would have saved your skin.
Not being an agreeable player back then could have led to your expulsion from the clan, which almost always carried a death sentence.
But in the 21st Century?
When people are far more concerned about their latest Facebook post only getting half a dozen likes?
It's really not so existential, even if it feels so.
I don't know where in Mordor I'm going with this email, other than this: one thing I'm certainly not waffling about is that in two days…
