Why re-reading my stuff is a good idea

Last night, while not doing the thing I should have been — sleeping — I happened across a post in a popular sci-fi and fantasy reader group.

A popular one at that.

It had attracted hundreds of hearts, likes, and replies like orcs to the mines of Moria, and after reading the first line, I could see why:

"Remember …. Half of what makes these books great is rereading them.

EVERY read through, you will find things you missed previously.

Every

Single

Time.

I’ve read them more than 6 times (some if the earlier ones even more times) and I still find new things."

If that doesn’t have you nodding like a teacher’s pet, then you, my loyal disciple, have yet to experience the wonders of re-reading your favourite books (fiction or otherwise).

This applies to movies, too.

Despite watching Gladiator dozens of times — a mandatory Christmas obligation here at Watson HQ — I’m still picking up nuggets of wisdom, lines I glossed over (much less absorbed), and moments of crossover between my season of life and the story itself, giving me real pause for thought, a deeper sense of resonance, and sometimes…

Providing me with answers to questions I never knew I had.

I concede this might sound a little abstract to those who do not routinely undertake re-reading/re-watching, but that doesn’t make it any less true.

Give it a crack and see for yourself.

And in case you’re wondering where to start, well, I can think of no better place than my very own pieces of fiction, especially my long-running epic fantasy series, The Divided Region.

And for the first time ever, now it comes in glorious matte-finished paperbacks that promise to complement your bookshelf.
