I used to think I was the one in charge when I sat down to write.
The grand architect. The puppet master. The Overlord of the entire damn narrative.
I’d wrestle with plot points, nudge characters into impossible situations, and dictate the rise and fall of the story arc. And just when I thought I had everything mapped out, every betrayal neatly plotted, every victory orchestrated…
Milo-the-Muse throws a wrench in the works.
Or in the case of The Great Betrayal, an anvil.
I’m not going to lie. There are moments in this upcoming fifth instalment of The Divided Region – arcs, twists, character decisions – that genuinely took me by surprise.
And you know what?
I WOULDN’T HAVE IT ANY OTHER WAY.
When a story starts to write itself and the characters develop a will of their own and drag you down paths you hadn't even conceived… that’s when you know you’re onto something potent.
Something real.
It’s not a sign of losing control; it’s a sign the world has truly come alive.
Yes, there were headaches.
Yes, there were groans of frustration and countless days spent updating the outline, but the end result is a sequel that brings together the events of books one to four, delivers a riveting, action-packed read, and lays the foundation for what will be the epic climax of the series.
Lord only knows what Milo has in store once I get to work on that.
So, as we hurtle towards the release at the end of this month, consider this a fair warning (especially if you’ve been following Darius and the crew from the beginning):
Expect the unexpected.
