Master Liam is fast approaching the one-year mark.
In many ways, it feels like he’s always been here, but at the same time, nine months isn’t that long either. Make it make sense, Legionnaire. Please. Because I can’t. Everything has been a blur.
(A wonderful blur, but a blur nonetheless.)
Especially so with this “sleep regression” phase Lady Laura and I find ourselves in. 😭
Once we claw ourselves out of this quagmire, I will be a very happy man. That said, when you close one door on a challenge, a new one opens up, and I have to say, the one we’re heading into fills me with dread…
The eating phase.
Not because of the interesting “treasures” he will leave in his nappies, but rather the risk of choking.
I vividly remember an incident from my childhood when I was chowing down on cheesy garlic bread. The gooey mozzarella somehow got lodged in my throat and I couldn’t cough it up or swallow it down. My Pepsi didn’t help either.
It got so bad that my dad had to lift me up by my ankles and pound my back to get it out.
(I’m starting to spot a theme here… 🤔)
It seems that gravity and the almighty whacks did the trick.
The cheeseball dislodged itself from my throat and I could finally breathe again. Still to this day, I have a complicated relationship with mozzarella.
But yeah, it’s a phase we all had to go through.
So will Liam.
He can’t survive on liquids and butternut squash soup forever. At some point, the gods will demand I feed him brisket and T-bone steaks.
I cannot fail him. I will not.
Anyway, it got me thinking about writing.
As with parenthood, life, and work in general, there are phases in a writer’s life that you also dread.
For me, that’s editing.
Editing is a time-consuming and tedious task that no author I know enjoys.
I’ve tried skipping over it more times than I care to admit, but no matter how meticulous I am with the first draft, I always end up having to go back and fix things. It’s merely part of the job.
The only saving grace?
Once it’s done, I ship the manuscript off to my editor and it isn’t long before it is out in the world.
Like Exiled, Forbidden Forest, Last Alliance, One True King, and my supernatural thriller duology, The Curse of Abbey Ruins.
The result?
Portals for readers (and writer) to escape into.
And this, Legionnaire, is why I do what I do.
When life gives you stress or anxiety, I give you adventure.
