The pain of buying new stuff

Black Friday is firmly upon us, and I’ve already been suckered into the commercial fanfare.

I’ve bought more supplements than I ever need…

A two-metre camera stand I have no immediate plans of using…

Books I probably won’t read for the best part of a year…

And now a brand-spanking new MacBook after my eldest son, Liam, decided to launch the TV remote at my old one, thus destroying the screen.

’Twas a bad day indeed, as seasoned Legionnaires will recall.

On top of a bad week, I might add, after losing precious files during a “cloud transfer” — a boss fight I’ll need to endure again with this new computer.

Such is the pain of buying new stuff, especially computers.

You see, for the entirety of this year, I’ve been using my nippy custom-built Windows PC that I bought some five years ago. Despite not being a Windows guy and almost returning it for its constant whirring, this ugly machine has been one helluva workhorse for me.

Even as I write this last email on it, I feel a little melancholic.

Like I’m about to walk away from an unsuspecting lover who is totally invested in me and my success.

(Good Lord, I’ve really got to stop personifying objects.)

But walk away I must.

Between the promise of portability and Mac-only software I need for my work, this tech update has been long overdue. I just pray to the old gods and the new that I do not lose any of my writing files and folders in the process, like last time.

Though it would make a bloody good email.

Conflict and drama are one heck of a drug, after all.

… But not so much for the person enduring it.

And in my utterly biased, self-soothing opinion, there’s nobody more qualified to confirm this than Darius from The Divided Region.

It seems that no matter where this character turns, challenges, obstacles, conflict, death, and drama follow.

Almost like a constant shadow.

But then, you’d expect that if you’re a part of the most notorious thieves’ guild in Elron, wouldn’t you?
