It was circa 2021-22 and I was itching for a fresh physical challenge.
I had been a vegan for 30 days (never again)… took cold showers during the winter months (surprisingly amazing)… ate raw beef liver (perhaps the best supplement on the planet)… did cold plunges (way harder than cold showers)… ran barefoot (just don’t)… stripped away carbs (worse than going vegan)…
But I wanted to go further.
Something that caused the ol’ nerves to quiver.
Then the idea hit me.
Why not do a three-day fast?
No food. No coffee. Just water.
Now, I'm no stranger to intermittent fasting (for the uninitiated, it’s simply a time-restricted eating window), but rarely did I go longer than 20 hours.
So, yeah, I was quietly fumbling with my fingers.
Lady Laura made no attempt to hide her disapproval either.
"This is why women live longer than men,” she scorned.
🤣
Anyway, being the prudent chap I am…
I DID IT ANYWAY.
The first day was really tough, more so because I knew I had another two to go. But when the sun rose on the second day, something weird happened…
My hunger was non-existent.
My focus shot through the roof.
It became… easy.
I know how ridiculous that sounds.
When Day Three swung around, I could have gone another day or two — especially after seeing my clear skin and glowing face, which is a rare sight here in the UK — but, alas, we had planned to meet up with friends at a Texas-style BBQ smokehouse to break the fast.
And broke it I did!
Oh my, brisket never tasted so good.
Anyway, the immoral of the story?
Sometimes, things sound a lot worse in your head than they end up being.
Whether it's fasting for a few days, cutting out sugar from your life, or moving across the country/world, you'll never truly know until you act. If the main character of The Divided Region, Darius, could chime in to this email right now, he'd agree wholeheartedly.
And before anyone complains that it’s easy for a fictional character to say that, I'll leave you with this little nugget:
Fiction is simply real life but with better outfits, bigger swords, and more dramatic fight scenes.
All three of which you'll find in abundance in The Great Betrayal:
