Pissy for no reason

Ever get those days where you wake up feeling pissy for absolutely no reason?

Not angry. Not sad. Just… off.

When the slightest inconvenience — the kind you’d normally let fly over your head — suddenly finds a special spot under your skin like an unwelcome parasite? Well, that’s me today…

… and I’ve got absolutely zero reason for it.

Master Liam is sleeping MUCH better now, giving Lady Laura and me 3-4 hour stretches of uninterrupted peace at a time (can’t complain)…

I’m reaching new readers every day (definitely cannot complain)…

The heatwave here in the UK has finally cooled, bringing much respite to us all (🙏)…

So, what gives?

Honestly, no idea, and that’s okay.

I’m guilty of always trying to find the “why” behind things; always digging into my psyche for an answer that 1) might not even be there, or 2) might not want to be discovered.

It’s a futile exercise on days like today as some moods don’t always come with answers.

So long as it doesn’t derail my day… I’ve learned to shrug and make an email out of it (😏).

It’s funny because we’re so quick to check in with people when they’re feeling low or glum, but never when they’re high as a kite. It’s like we’re all in this constant pursuit of happiness without acknowledging that’s simply NOT how life works.

Imagine for a second how dull this existence would be if we only had one season…

Or constant day or night…

Or, in this case, one mood.

There would be no contrast, no fresh experiences to draw from, no reason to do the things we do. I mean, would you yearn for a vacation if you were constantly bumming it out on a tropical beach? Would you miss the day if you only ever experienced night? Would you enjoy the crunch of salad if you only ever ate meat and vegetables your entire life?

The point being: the mind needs contrast.

Our spirit becomes restless without it.

So if that means occasionally feeling pissy for no reason at all, then that’s a price I’ll pay again and again.

It’s the rollercoaster that is life.

And it’s something I explore often in my fiction — particularly in The Divided Region — albeit in extremes. (What fantasy series would be worth reading if the characters spent all their days eating cheese and drinking Dwarven ale in the tavern? NONE).

TDR is laced with misadventure…

Good decisions…

Bad decisions…

Misdeeds…

Beasts that lurk in the shadows…

Dark lords that haunt the populace’s psyche…

And characters who not only carry their own demons, regrets, and dreams… but have more than a couple of pissy days themselves. The difference is, their reasons are justified.
