I DEPEND ON THEM.
Master Liam might be one summer old, but even now, he barely sleeps longer than 1-2 hours at a time, which, as you can imagine, has had some pretty crippling effects on our energy levels.
Pair that with ever-looming deadlines, daily emails, and relentless audiobook production, and you might begin to understand why I gladly bend the knee to caffeine.
Luckily, I consume mostly the good kind and by “good,” I mean the stuff that isn’t laced with sugar or heavily processed ingredients.
In fact, I even have a name for my energy-firing protocol:
“The two-part caffeine cocktail.”
Sure, it won’t win any marketing awards any time soon, but it sure as hell gives me a pick-me-up when I need it.
Tell me more, you say?
Fine.
It usually starts with an all-black Americano with no sugars or syrup shots first thing in the morning. It’s hardly exciting, but it also doesn’t spike my blood sugar like its sweet cousins. A couple of hours later, I pull out the big gun that is known as Neutonic — a so-called “productivity drink” and the first of its kind apparently.
I say apparently because I am somewhat sceptical when anyone says their offering is the first of its kind (yes, even as a self-aggrandising preacher of my world’s-first, one-of-a-kind author newsletter).
Anyway:
Despite its eye-watering price of nearly £3 ($4.50) per 330ml can, and having more scientifically backed ingredients than I care to pronounce, it works and that’s all my to-do list cares about.
It’s a caffeine cocktail my main character, Darius, and his ragtag band of friends could have used many times in The Great Betrayal. The number of hurdles and deadly encounters they stumble upon are so numerous it zapped my energy just writing them.
In the Forbidden Forest segment alone, I’ve counted at least five such grave trials, and let me tell you, none end… well… you’ll have to find out on Saturday 31st.
I know, I’m a tease. 😉
