My second ghost encounter

Given the flood of replies to yesterday’s email about my first ghost encounter, I figured I’d share my second disturbing encounter with the supernatural.

This one occurred in my mother-in-law’s house many moons ago.

There was a brief period when I had my computer set up in the garage, which, given the lack of insulation, wasn’t my brightest idea, but it did its job (and also provided the “lively” encounter I’m about to share).

My routine was simple:

When everyone went to bed, I’d bang out my freelance projects, and when everyone left the house circa 9–10 am the following morning, I’d hit the pillow.

This went on for a couple of weeks.

(And let me tell you, it sucked eggs.)

Until one morning, when everyone left the house, something strange happened.

My bag, which hadn’t been touched in weeks on the shelf, suddenly tipped over and spilled its contents onto the ground.

My heart stopped. My fingers froze in panic. When my pulse did return, it roared in my ears. I remember, whilst in a daze from exhaustion and shock, trying to wrack my mind for an explanation… something to explain how or why it might have fallen.

There was no draught, no fans running, no nothing.

Just a stationary me and an obnoxious LED bar beaming overhead.

So, what did I do when no answers came?

I did the only thing any unnerved male adolescent would do in that moment:

Yelled that ghosts don’t scare me and then fled the garage.

I don’t know what it is about me and the supernatural, but we seem to cross each other’s paths from time to time. Thankfully, these days, my fear is much better managed. If something goes “bump” during the night, it’s probably an old pipe.

If something “shimmers” in the mirror, it’s probably my impending cataract.

Maybe that’s the natural progression for us all as we travel deeper into adulthood, or perhaps I’m just being cynical. In any case, it makes for good email fodder (going by yesterday’s reaction).

And if you enjoy micro chilling tales like this, there’s a chance you might also like my supernatural thriller duology, The Curse of Abbey Ruins.

It’s available in e-book and now audiobook.
