For much of the past decade, I've avoided LitRPG and Progression Fantasy for the very simple reason:
I DIDN'T UNDERSTAND IT.
While yes, I'm no stranger to RPG video games like Skyrim, this concept of literature merging with role-playing had my brain fried.
Until the other day, when I stumbled on an interview featuring LitRPG author Seth Ring, who explained the sub-genres in a way that actually clicked.
From what I understand (now), Progression Fantasy focuses on the idea of characters moving forward on a journey and progressing in their quest, often becoming more powerful or skilled as they do so.
LitRPG, however, is Progression Fantasy, but with gaming mechanics baked into it, such as stats, level-ups, quest screens, etc.
Again, I need to see it with my own eyes to properly grasp the execution.
I'd say I'm more inclined to read a Progression Fantasy novel before LitRPG as it seems closer to what I'm already used to, BUT…
The RPG element also has me interested.
So for all my Progression Fantasy and LitRPG Legionnaires, I ask a favour:
What book/web novel do you recommend as a good "starting point" for each subgenre for those wet behind the ears?
