The other day, while Lady Laura was chewing my ear off about Halo, our new robot vacuum, I was somewhat pleased for the following distraction comment from this newcomer:
You will see all these book tubers say crap books like The Blade Itself are 5 star must reads so you go out and purchase them and you figure out it's a slog fest that isn't worth your time and give up on it 15 chapters in . Then you come to YouTube and find [Exiled] for free and you realize book tubers are idiots
Now I can't speak for Joe's work as I've not read any, despite having several of his titles in my Audible library; however, like so many in the genre, they come with a wedge of pages.
Now I know for some, that's not a problem – if anything, it's a selling point.
But for this season of my life with two little ones, a series unfinished, and a vacuum that's stealing affection from me…
I just haven't got the time to plough through hundreds of pages.
It's also why I'm now digging up shorts from the pulp era like Conan the Barbarian.
Anyway…
This is in no way me throwing shade at Joe. I think he's a cool guy, but the point about booktubers recommending a lot of slog fests has some validity, and it's also a big reason why I ignore them.
I suspect our newcomer will, too.
