The year is 1943.
Edwin Land was on vacation with his 3-year-old daughter, Jennifer, when he took a photo of her playing in the sand.
As he started to pack away his camera, Jennifer looked up with a frown of pure, innocent confusion.
She didn't want to wait days or weeks for a photo lab to process the film — she wanted to see the memory now.
But this was 1943 — not 2026.
So she then asked him something that would fundamentally shift not only photography but the course of history forever:
"Daddy, why do we have to wait to see the picture?"
Fast-forward four years, and the first Polaroid camera was born.
The world fundamentally changed forever after this. The same thing happened when cars came along, and we were no longer limited to a horse's speed.
Or when the Wright Brothers took mankind to the skies.
The point of all this?
We never know what tomorrow might bring, which is equally exciting as it is terrifying, but such is the human way.
We're always walking towards horizons unseen, and it's no different from the way I approach my writing these days.
I used to plot vigorously in my earlier years as I had no faith in my ability (let alone Milo the Muse) to guide me out of any cul-de-sac I might write myself into.
Nowadays, I have a general heading, but once the story is in motion, I let the wind — Milo — guide the way.
That, my faithful Legionnaire, is where the best adventures happen.
