I LOVE listening to music whilst writing and editing.
The creative juices it unlocks make slow-cooked brisket look more like leather than a sensual delight.
Music not only helps lock me in, but — call me kooky — it pulls out the scene and puts it under a microscope in ways silence simply cannot. I see lines, body language, and wordless exchanges that otherwise like to play hide and seek.
That doesn't mean I am incapable of writing stellar stuff without these sweet symphonies.
(You have been reading these emails, right?!)
But it certainly helps to unblock the gunk that holds my fingers back from wreaking havoc across the keyboard.
I find it's those almost-lost moments that can make the difference between stories that stick…
And those that fall away right after The End.
Am I right or am I right?
Anyway, I can confidently say there are many such moments in the upcoming sequel to TDR.
And one of the soundtracks powering me through this draft comes straight out of an old fantasy RPG video game I used to play long before I had kids and worldly responsibilities.
