After a week away from Watson HQ con la familia, we're back to our regular broadcasting.
Let's kick off the week with an expletive-laden post from someone I follow about Criticism vs Feedback (and why he doesn't heed the former).
This sounds like a dickish thing to say.
But I don't give a flying f*ck about anyone'e opinions.
Until the very moment they buy from me, or support my businesses.
That's how I seperate feedback from criticism.
Criticism: opinions of those who never benefit your life.
Feedback: opinions of those who do.
This aligns a lot with how I do bizniz here in the fictional realm, although I take it a step further.
Not only do I NOT engage with "critics," but I'm also hesitant to take feedback from even my fiercest of Patrons for one simple reason…
I'M IN THE CREATIVE INDUSTRY.
I'm selling my imagination in an e-book, audiobook, and paperback form (which, by the way, you can now order on Amazon for the first time ever).
My imagination — for better or worse — is the product.
To water it down or blunt the edges to appease a few would be like spraying bleach on a piece of art just to do away with the dust.
Terrible analogy, but we're rockin' and rollin' with it.
While yes, fiction is still very much a business and shares a lot of the same freckles with traditional markets…
This is an ideas- and taste-based business.
If I were in the business of solving problems in someone's life/business via physical goods or services, you can bet my peachy behind that I'd be listening to my customers.
But creative work?
Sorry, you either like Papa's stew or you don't.
(No offence taken if you don’t! I just thank you for giving it a go.)
And if gritty, fast-paced epic fantasy that doesn't take an age to finish gets your knife and fork twitching…
