Let’s play a game.
Metaphorically speaking, what else could be described in the following dialogue by Bilbo (who is talking to Gandalf about the One Ring in The Fellowship of the Ring):
“…I have felt it was like an eye. . .I am always. . .wondering if it is safe, and pulling it out to make sure. I tried locking it up, but I found I couldn't rest without it in my pocket. I don't know why. And I don't seem able to make up my mind.”
Again, pretend Bilbo isn’t describing the One Ring.
What else could he be speaking about?
Think about it.
Chew on it for a second.
Any ideas?
If your guess is mobile phones, then congratulations, Legionnaire, you’ve just earned yourself a cookie because that’s exactly how most people treat their phones these days.
We get it out…
Touch it…
Stroke it…
Cannot be without it…
And, in some cases, get entirely consumed — and thus, destroyed — by it.
Does that mean we’re all destined to have gangly limbs and a grin that would scare half of Europe away?
Of course not.
What I am saying is this level of dependency isn’t healthy.
Youngsters and wizards alike agree on this.
In fact, the shift is already happening.
Social media usage has dropped in recent years, and more and more people are buying “dumb phones” (yes, they are real — Google it) to better manage their dopamine receptors.
You know what I say?
Forget dumb phones and social media detoxes.
Pick up a fantasy book instead.
A good fantasy story set in an immersive world with interesting characters will do far more for your health and concentration levels than these tactics, which — at best — promise temporary relief.
What I will concede, however, is that most books in this genre are long and bloated.
Not exactly the best remedy for those with fried brains.
That’s why I wrote The Divided Region.
(Oh yes, you knew it was coming!)
These books are lean, mean, and can easily be read in 1-3 sittings. Every chapter earns its place, and I believe it’s why so many people around the world from all walks of life have been thoroughly engrossed by the series so far.
So if you’d like to un-Gollum yourself and be less reliant on your phone for your daily dopamine hit, then here’s where to go:
