A question I get every so often

A question I am asked once in an equinox is if I ever have plans on foraying into sci-fi.

The answer is always the same:

YES.

I mean, I’ve written horror. I am also currently entrenched in a gritty fantasy world, so it would only be fitting to complete my speculative fiction resume by planting my flag in the sci-fi genre.

That said, just because fantasy and sci-fi have some overlap doesn’t mean every reader will follow you there.

Luckily, I do have something of a loose plan:

The same way I avoid high fantasy with complex magic systems, I would also steer away from “hard” science fiction for the very simple reason that I quit school decades ago, and I don’t want to be lectured on fungi.

Then there’s the second bit:

Being a fantasy evangelist at heart, there’s every chance my science fiction novel would descend into a “sci-fantasy” fast, taking inspiration from the likes of Dune or dystopias like Silo or Elysium.

But in case you’re hyperventilating that I’m about to abandon The Divided Region for the distant galaxies, fret not, my apostle.

I am not so quick to abandon my station.

We’ve still got plenty of important work to be done here.

And even once the series has concluded, the spin-off series idea I have for Estos’ elite assassins’ organisation (the Unseen) will not leave me. Like a possessed ex that stalks you from afar while you’re taking a shower, it refuses to yield.

So if I do end up foraying into science fiction, it won’t be for at least another year.

Perhaps longer.

Anyway, I’m not sure if this makes a shred of difference to your life, but it’s a question I’ve been meaning to address. However, while I might not have immediate plans to write a sci-fi series… that doesn’t mean I haven’t already dipped my toes in H2O.

Yes, among the 141 micro tales in Tiny Epics: Vol. 1 are 35 sci-fi stories that can be read in 20 seconds or less, but can stick with you for hours or days.

Like that ex I spoke about.

And best of all…

It comes in e-book AND audiobook.
