I got a comment the other day that…
Let’s just say it's perhaps one of the most hostile testimonies I’ve ever received. I’ll admit, it had me smiling from ear to ear.
Take a look:
I swear if Janga and Alere perish in the series I will leave a scathing, five-star roast that’ll burn your eyes (yes it’s a thing) and never forgive you. Read: you have been warned. Finishing it on Kindle today — I WILL cry.
I don’t mean to be “that guy,” but Jangar is spelt with an R.
Just sayin’.
Semantics aside, I LOVE reviews like this because it means my characters have a beating heart.
Not necessarily in a “he’s a good guy/gal” way.
Rather, in a “this person feels bloody real” sort of way.
But I will cede that Jangar — especially — is a character I’ve received many such threats from by readers. Hell, even Lady Laura has warned me that my place in the bed is in jeopardy if anything happens to the Elronian brute.
(sigh)
If only these people knew it isn’t me that decides what happens to characters…

Alas, that’s an email for another day.
What I do find funny, however, is One True King (Book 4 of TDR) is not only where this delicious testimony came from, but it’s also where most of these “hostile” pleas derive.
Perhaps it has something to do with their small band splitting up?
Maybe it has something to do with the stakes of the series reaching dangerous heights?
Or the fact that the entire kingdom of Vlencia is bearing down on Darius’ cohort?
Or maybe — just maybe — it has something to do with my callous ability to kill off loved characters?
In any case, I can’t promise Alere’s or Jangar’s (or even Darius’) safety in One True King. Or any other sequel for that matter. This might be a turn-off for new readers with meek hearts, but for the ones who like to live on the edge?
That want those emotional, gut-punching twists when you least expect them?
