I don’t care what anyone says…
If it weren’t for The Lord of the Rings, the fantasy genre as we know it would cease to exist.
Bold claim?
Not quite.
It has been synonymous with fantasy for decades, and it rightfully deserves to be.
Tolkien gave us a living, breathing world — filled to the brim with action, adventure, and a memorable storyline — that is still visited to this day by old adventurers and new, myself included.
If I can have even one thousandth of an impact as LOTR has before I walk the fields of Elysium, then I’ll be skipping through them.
That said, it isn’t just the world that’s loved by many.
The characters are, too.
While my thoughts on Frodo remain much unchanged (not a hero in my eyes), whenever I rewatch the series, the dialogue still elicits chills. So much so that I’ve accrued quite the list of quotes over the years.
I do it with all my favourite books and movies.
And guess what?
I’m about to share six of my favourites right now.
Who knows, perhaps one or two of them are yours, too.
- “Not all those who wander are lost.” — Bilbo Baggins
- “All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us.” — Gandalf
- “I can’t carry it for you, but I can carry you.” — Samwise Gamgee
- “A day may come when the courage of Men fails… but it is not this day.”
- “I gave you the chance of aiding me willingly, but you have elected the way of pain.” — Saruman
- “Even the smallest person can change the course of the future.” — Galadriel
I was originally going to add commentary as to why I like each one so much, but I refrained (for today, at least) for reasons being that each quote will mean something different entirely to other people.
Perhaps I’ll share them tomorrow.
Perhaps I won't.
In the meantime, if these memorable pieces of dialogue get you thirsty for epic fantasy, dark lords, wizards, urgent councils, and bumbling heroes trying to navigate a world hunting them down…
