Just the other day, I was alerted to this comment left behind by a reader of The Divided Region (specifically Exiled):
Really like the writing here – no try-hard fancy word-play, doesn't elaborately describe characters and scenes, leaving something for the imagination to chew on. Good pacing as well. It's not a first-person snark-fest emotional character study – there is action and a plot. You avoid all the things that annoy me about modern SF/Fantasy writing. Keep it up and I may have hope for this genre after all. Everyone wanting to write should take some lessons from this author.
You can imagine Lady Laura’s face when she found my ego — which was already the size of the Sun — had enlarged by many multiples after reading this review.
Alas, it did.
Colossal egos aside, what this comment (like all the others before it) validates is my decision NOT to follow the crowd of modern sci-fi and fantasy writing with this series.
Instead, I stuck to my guns and wrote the book I wanted to read in this genre.
I figured if I haven’t got the time or desire for long, verbose books with a hundred POV characters, then there are probably several thousand others who don’t either.
Those are the folks I serve.
They are the people I’d like to share a cold pint of stout with.
And they are also the people reading this very email right now…
