Born at 14:14, Master Liam took his first breath, weighing in at an uncanny 7 pounds and 7 ounces.
I often ponder the meaning of it.
Now he stands proudly in his cot, greeting us every morning with an “Uh-oh” and a smile that erases the drudgery of the night before. Such are the juxtapositions of having a baby.
And now that baby turns one.
What a weird feeling that is to write…
At the risk of sounding like every parent to ever grace this planet, I can still remember the day he was born like it was yesterday. Everything from Laura’s initial contractions 48 hours before active labour (oh yes, she went through the ringer) right to our slick newborn opening his eyes to the bright hospital lights that beamed overhead still stands amid my hazy memory.
And in four months, we’ll be doing it all over again for his younger brother. 😅
What a whirlwind.
What a crazy year it has been. But above all…
What an honour it has been.
As Laura readies the little man for his cake-smash photoshoot in the coming hour, it is not lost on me how lucky we are — even with the sleepless nights, the broken laptops, phones, and the little quality time Laura and I have spent together compared to years past.
Because we both know that Future Daniel and Laura would do anything to have what we currently have in abundance right now.
Before we know it, this three-toothed sleep terrorist will be a grouchy teenager who won’t greet us with smiles every morning, but demands for breakfast and pocket money.
So we’re going to hold him a little closer today.
Drink in every waking hour God gives us, and celebrate the joys (and destruction) he has brought into our lives this year — which there are plenty.
This one is for you, my boy.
