A few weeks ago, I emailed you to ask where sci-fi ranked in your world.
Many of you wrote in and confirmed my suspicions:
QUITE HIGH.
That came as not much of a surprise to me.
Fantasy and sci-fi have always been blood brothers in many ways, bound by their love for speculative narratives and providing plenty of overlap for readers. And while any author with a wedge of marketing nouse would be wise not to assume their readers will follow them into any genre they write in, fantasy and sci-fi tend to be exceptions to such maxims.
That doesn’t mean there aren’t caveats (there are).
The same way I avoid high fantasy with complex magic systems, I also do the same with “hard” science fiction.
The opposite is also true for some readers who love drowning in all these delicious details.
But me?
I come to these genres to suspend belief — not be grounded by it.
So, to answer today’s topic:
YES, I DO HAVE PLANS TO WRITE SCIENCE FICTION.
I have been sitting on a couple of ideas for a while now, but none have been worthy of watering just yet. Besides, I have an epic low fantasy series to conclude, which may or may not surpass a sixth instalment. Then, I’ll have to decide between jumping on a spaceship or delving into an assassin’s conclave in a TDR spin-off series I’ve also been sitting on for a while.
The difference is, I’ve already written a very rough introduction for it.
So yeah. Decisions, decisions.
