There's a lot of panic in the author groups I lurk in.
People are genuinely losing their hairlines over the boycott that's supposedly "ravaging" their business. Who knows, perhaps it is. Personally, I'm not seeing much of a difference, as the bulk of my book sales come through my Storehouse, and I very much intend to keep it that way.
But then, I only just republished my books a few weeks ago after a multi-year "boycott" of my own.
Enough self-aggrandising already!
Given the noise coming out of these groups, I did a Google search while slurping my Americano and was immediately hit by a wall of headlines.
"1 in 5 Americans back Amazon boycott"
"As retailers drop DEI, some Black customers drop them"
"‘Economic blackout’ boycott will target Amazon, Twitch and Whole Foods"
"20% of Americans support boycott of firms aligning themselves with Trump agenda"
Crikey. 🫨
It seems there IS a lot of hot air around the topic.
I don't know about you, Legionnaire, but headlines like this make my head spin. It's one of the reasons I steer clear of the news these days. It seems every time I catch myself watching an anchorman and their pearly whites spit out the day's misgivings, my mood takes a weird dip.
Same with Twitter.
No matter how hard I curate my feed, there's always one or two tweets that slip through the net and get me twitchy. And usually, it stems from the same stinking pile of horse-turd – politics.
This Amazon boycott is no different.
But if there's one thing I've learned in my 34 spins around the sun, it's that these events are usually just brief storms dressed as hurricanes.
And a brief storm this seems to be. Take this recent headline from Forbes:
"Amazon Defies Weeklong Boycott As Sales Increase, Data Shows"
And this one:
"Amazon boycott is ending. What comes next?"
The point of this email?
Sure, vote with your wallet, repost your friend's post on how mean Jeff is, whatever… but for the love of your sanity, don't get lost in the noise.
Instead, unplug, take a hot bubble bath, and trade the noise for something more therapeutic…
Like my digitally narrated audiobooks.
