Why I’m taking down my audiobooks after 2 weeks

After Saturday’s little bombshell where I revealed I’ll be taking down my digitally narrated audiobooks after just two weeks of them going live, I knew some of you would have questions like…

“Why would you do that?”

“Is there something wrong with the audiobooks?”

“Are you running some sort of elaborate scheme?”

Questions that, quite frankly, were answered in the emails leading up to the soft launch of my audiobooks. 😤

(Alright, perhaps not the last one.)

Luckily for the slackers lurking among us, I will not be ordering them to dig deep into their inbox to find the answers. I’m feeling particularly generous today. Instead, I’ll be giving a brief explanation behind my decision, which won’t come as a shock to Legionnaires and loyal Patrons who were paying attention.

In a nutshell, I’m taking down my brand-spanking new audiobooks because:

I’m already working on a new and improved digital voice using the most reputable virtual voice software available — ElevenLabs.

The voice even has a name:

Julian.

“Hail, Julian!” you reply.

I salute your enthusiasm, Legionnaire. Keep it up. 🤴

Anyway, Julian here is the cloned voice of a professional book narrator whose pockets are no doubt full after some 60,000+ downloads. And let me tell you, the difference in quality between my audiobook’s current virtual voice (by Google) and this one is stark.

It was love at first hearing.

Even the description of Julian’s voice made me weak in the knees:

A mature British male voice with a hint of roughness – yet soothing enough to melt butter.

I bet he’s wooed a few fine ladies in his time.

“But D.J.J. Watson, why didn’t you go with ElevenLabs from the get-go?”

Two reasons:

1. I didn’t want to invest a bunch of sweat and coin into creating audiobooks nobody wanted. Google Play offered a far more streamlined and efficient service to test demand (which turned out to be quite a lot).

2. I wanted to reward early Patrons by not only offering them an incredible deal (my audiobooks cost a fraction of most narrated books) but also promising to “grandfather” them into the updated audio version later on — for free.

Lucky for you, there’s still time for you to hop aboard the wacky wagon.

The rules are simple:

– Purchase any (or all) of my audiobooks at the lowest price they will ever be…

– Enjoy listening to my books while I work line by line with Julian, the premium digital voice, to put together the best possible narration…

– When the improved audiobooks are ready, I will send you a private link to download each audiobook you have bought onto your BookFunnel app.

But you must act by Friday at 23:59 EST.
